How to Read Protein, Carbs, and Fat on Labels

A practical guide to reading the serving information first, connecting the three main macros, and comparing label details with a food log.

Begin with serving size, not the macro grams

A Nutrition Facts label presents its calorie and nutrient information in relation to a stated serving size. The FDA recommends checking serving size and servings per container before interpreting calories and nutrients. That first step gives the numbers a frame of reference: protein, carbohydrate, and fat are listed for the labeled serving, not automatically for every amount on the plate.
